The Silverback Fund

Established in 2017, this fund is designed to provide specific opportunities for gifts restricted to student-athlete scholarships. The goal for this program is to annually secure gifts that will continue to build scholarship budgets each year to operate at the maximum amount permitted in accordance with NCAA legislation. Once those levels are attained, funds from other revenue sources can be moved from scholarship budgets to assist with operational needs. The goal, over time, is to fund a large majority of annual scholarship expenses with this fund, so that other sources of revenue can be used to meet other needs.

Other ways to give
  • Sport Specific Donations
  • Gift-In-Kind
  • Graduate Assistantships

Gifts may be made directly to any sport program, the athletics training program, athletics marketing and communications, the PSU cheer squad, or the athletics general fund. Designated gifts to any of these programs are placed in the Foundation account that exists specifically for that program.

Funds in these accounts are used at the discretion of the head coach (or account manager) with the approval of the Director of Athletics. These funds supplement the program's annual operation for expenses such as equipment, recruiting, facility upgrades, summer financial aid for student-athletes, etc. A gift can be made via cash, check or credit card by clicking the link along the side.

Annual gifts to these accounts contribute the overall annual giving to the Pitt State Athletic Fund. Sport specific donations are a component of that fund in the same manner as the Annual Fund (i.e. ticket access program), corporate sponsorships, Gorilla Gala, etc.

Gift-in-kind goods and services may be donated "same as cash" in place of a cash sponsorship. These gift-in-kind opportunities include, but are not limited to: meals and catering, lodging, vehicle services, athletics and office equipment and supplies, medical services and equipment, advertising, nutritional services and supplies, and technology services and equipment.

Gift-in-kind donors may receive similar benefits in terms of advertising, tickets, and business-to-business exposure. Those interested in providing goods or services can contact us to discuss these possibilities.

The athletics department strives each year to provide all programs with Graduate Assistant coaching and administrative positions, not only to assist with daily operations and provide more help to staffs in each sport, but to also provide professional development opportunities for graduate students at Pittsburg State who plan to enter the professions of coaching, communications, sports medicine, and/or athletics administration.

The positions are not funded by the State of Kansas and have not been integrated at this point into the university’s annual budget. Unless positions are supported through private giving, coaches and administrative staff must decide whether to fund positions through operational budgets or the overall athletics budget, which diminishes funds available for scholarships and operations.

Sponsorships of assistantship positions are available on a two-year commitment basis (as that is typically the amount of time a student spends completing a Master’s degree). Sponsorships can be restricted to a certain program if desired. The cost of the position (i.e. the costs of the sponsorship) is $12,000 per academic year plus the cost of six hours of graduate school tuition. The positions available for sponsorship are:

Football – 2 positions

Track – 2 positions

Men’s Basketball – 1 position

Women’s Basketball – 1 position

Baseball – 1 position

Softball – 1 position

Volleyball – 1 position

Media Relations/Communications – 2 positions

Athletic Training/Sports Medicine – 2 positions

Strength and Conditioning – 2 positions

Athletics Administration – 2 positions
